Reading the map

The dashed grey line is where the storm has already been. The solid coloured line is its forecast path, with a marker at each advisory point and the time it is expected there. The shaded area around that path is the cone of uncertainty — the storm centre is likely to stay inside it, but the cone is not the size of the storm, and damaging weather regularly occurs well outside it.

Colour follows intensity, from tropical depression through to category 5. Longitudes are unwrapped around each storm, so systems near the international date line draw correctly instead of streaking across the map.

Tropical data is provided by XWeather, relaying official advisories from the National Hurricane Center and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. Always follow nhc.noaa.gov and your national meteorological service for warnings and evacuation guidance.
